Shopware 6 vs Magento / Adobe Commerce: power at what price?

Two open, extensible, B2B-capable platforms. One of them needs a devops team just to stay upright. Here is what that actually costs.

The genuinely close comparison

Unlike Shopify or Wix, Magento is a real peer: open source, deeply extensible, strong B2B module, huge catalogues, multi-store. If someone tells you Shopware is obviously better than Magento at everything, they are selling. The differences are about operations, cost and where the vendor is heading — not raw capability.

The operations tax

Magento 2 is heavy. Indexers, cron, Elasticsearch, Varnish, RabbitMQ and a build step that takes real minutes. It works beautifully when a competent devops team runs it, and it is miserable when nobody owns it. Shopware runs happily on a far simpler stack, which for a mid-sized company is not a technical detail — it is the difference between a system you can afford to operate and one you cannot.

The Adobe question

Adobe Commerce is a licence and an upsell path into a much larger suite. Magento Open Source still exists, but the gravitational pull of the product is enterprise. If you are a €30m industrial wholesaler, ask yourself whether you want to be the smallest customer in someone's enterprise portfolio or a normal-sized one in someone else's.

Choose Magento when… choose Shopware when…

Magento: you already run it well, you have the devops capability in-house, your catalogue is genuinely enormous, or you are deep in the Adobe stack already. Shopware: you are a European mid-market company, you want a simpler operational footprint, you want a vendor whose centre of gravity is companies your size, and you want your developers building features instead of babysitting indexers.

  • Without a devops owner, Magento 2 will hurt.
  • Ask whether you want to be the smallest customer in an enterprise portfolio.
